Ponderosa Pine
Two main Ponderosa Pines at the site both portraying cultivation methods from Florence.
Plant Overview
The Ponderosa pine is a resilient tree that can live for an extremely long time in harsh, dry conditions. Due to the lifespan of these trees, they can withstand drought as well as fires, making them hearty trees (Huckaby et al. 2003).
About This Tree
On the Florence Martin estate, there are two specific Ponderosa pines that are significant due to human cultivation. See the photo of the base of the tree with rocks surrounding the trunk to bring water to the roots. This was a way to cultivate these trees and further help them survive and thrive in the dry heat of Colorado.
