Plant Facts

Common Name: Tulips
Scientific Name: Tulipa
Plant Type: Flower

Plant Overview

Tulips are cup-shaped medium sized flowers that come in many vibrant colors. Tulips grow from bulbs that are often planted in the fall, flowering year after year in the spring (Rhoades & Barnett 2008). These flowers are quite common among gardeners as they are easy to care for while catching everyone’s’ eye.

About This Flower

The tulips at the site can be found in many distinct colors and throughout the different garden beds around the site. Bulbs uncovered during the excavation of the site are theorized to be additional tulip bulbs. The soil that the bulbs were found in was soil from outside of the site, brought in for the purpose of gardening. Instead of digging holes for each bulb, Florence planted the whole bed of bulbs and placed the new soil at the same time. When excavating, we could tell the soil was much different than the natural soil at the site, and that the whole garden bed was planted at once due to a lack of individual planting holes.
